The Severn Bridge was opened in 1966 to carry the M4 motorway over the Severn. In 1996 a second crossing was built, and the M4 was re–routed across it. The motorway over the original Severn Bridge was reclassified as the M48.
Use of both bridges by motorway traffic was initially subject to tolls, but these were abolished with effect from 17 December 2018.
